Schaak / Chess

Isis is bevangen door het schaakvirus.

Het begon met de film Lang Leve de Koningin.
En nu heeft haar 10-jarige neefje het spel aan haar in een paar minuten uitgelegd (hoe doén kinderen dat toch....dingen simpel houden...?).
Sindsdien is ze verslaafd!

Maar Isis haar vader heeft nooit leren schaken, dus dat is niet spannend: die is zo ingemaakt. En ik ben ook niet goed genoeg volgens mijn kleine grootmeester... Gelukkig is daar de moderne techniek en kan ze met dank aan KNSB Schaak gelukkig ook een partij tegen haar neefje spelen. En als hij niet online is, kan ze met DinoChess tegen de iPad spelen en meteen nog wat goeie 'moves' leren.

Als iemand nog goeie tips heeft voor mijn kleine schaakmonster dan hoor ik het graag!

Isis got caught by the chess-virus.

It all started with the Dutch children's movie about the chess game 'Lang leve de Koningin' (Long live the Queen).
And now her 10-year old cousin taught her the game in only a few minutes (what is the secret of children....how do they keep things so simple?).
Since that day she is hooked!

But Isis her father never really learned how to play chess... And I'm not good enough according to our little grandmaster... Lucky for her there is this app called KNSB Schaak, which lets her play matches with her cousin in the Netherlands. And when he is not online she can practice her skills with DinoChess.

Still looking for advice on learning chess with kids!

Zomer eten / Summer food

Makkelijk van te voren klaar te maken & lekker te eten op een kleedje buiten in de zon (bij gebrek aan zon kun je het ook best binnen eten...). Door de combinatie van granen (couscous) en erwten ook ideaal voor mijn kleine flexitariër. Echte carnivoren eten het met een (chipolata-)worstje.

Couscous salade met kikkererwten:
- couscous (klaargemaakt volgens de verpakking en af laten koelen)
- kikkererwten (uit blik, afgespoeld en uitgelekt)
- komkommer (in stukjes)
- tomaat (in stukjes)
- feta (in stukjes)

eventueel:
- kidneybonen
- olijven
- munt
- bieslook
- peterselie

net voor het opdienen:
- citroensap
- olijfolie

Easy to prepare long before dinner starts & perfect to enjoy on a plaid -outside- in the sun. Because of the combination of grains (couscous) and peas a perfect combination for vegetarians and flexitarians. Real carnivores might want to add a little chipolata sausage.

Couscous salade with chickpeas:
- couscous (follow the instructions on the package)
- chickpeas (canned, rinsed with water)
- cucumber (chopped)
- tomato (chopped)
- feta cheese

optional:
- kidney beans
- olives
- mint
- chives
- parsley

just before serving:
- lemon juice
- olive oil

Tingz

Isis heeft een zwak voor TicTac.
Ik heb iets tegen TicTac... (veel te veel suiker & eigenlijk helemaal niet lekker!)

En toen was daar Tingz!

Met Xylitol, fruitsmaak & monsters op de verpakking.

Isis wants me to buy her TicTac mints.
I refuse because of all the sugar... (and the fact that they don't taste that good at all!)

But now we have Tingz!

With Xylitol, a sweet fruittaste & sealed in little monsters.

Lang leve de Koning! / Long live the King!

Het blijft toch gek... op 30 april in Zwitserland zijn!

It was weird...not to be in the Netherlands at the 30th April!

Gekroond / Crowned

Koningsspelen... Koningsontbijt... Kroningsdag...
Isis vindt het maar niks dat het hier in Zwitserland géén Oranjefestijn is.

Dus heb ik beloofd om dinsdag oranjetompoezen te maken en mag ze gekroond en gesierd met oranje sjerp naar school. En 's avonds natuurlijk het Jeugdjournaal kijken voor de hoogtepunten :-)

The Dutch are preparing for a big party because of the new King: everything is Orange!
But in Switzerland, Tuesday will be just another day of the week with school & ballet class for Isis. Not fair according to her...

So I promised her to make orange coloured "tompoezen" and she can wear her crown and sash to school. And of course -in the evening- we will watch the Dutch children's news program Jeugdjournaal :-)

Polarn O. Pyret

Vorige week stond ik in Utrecht bij het Nijntje-stoplicht op het Vredenburg te wachten. Wat verandert een stad toch snel als je er niet meer elke dag in rondstruint.

Polarn O. Pyret heeft in de nieuwbouw een winkel geopend; een Zweeds merk met goeie, functionele, basic kinderkleren. Merino wollen thermokleding, hippe Skandinavische prints en de beroemde Polarn O. Pyret-streep. Je hoeft er trouwens niet speciaal voor naar Utrecht: ze hebben ook een webwinkel.

Last week I visited Utrecht. We were waiting in front of the Miffy-traffic light at the Vredenburg when I overlooked the big changes this city was making. A giant new building stood were the market used to be.

Polarn O. Pyret just opened a store in this new building at the Vredenburg. I love the brand for its functional and basic childrens clothing. They use soft and warm merino wool, hip Scandinavian prints and their famous Polarn O. Pyret-stripe. If you'r not near Utrecht, you can also use their online shop.

BBQ Popcorn

Had ik al verteld dat mijn broer briljant leuk is?
Afgelopen weekend hebben de kinderen bij hem popcorn gemaakt op de barbecue.

Dat doe je -natuurlijk- met een zeepklopper die je vastmaakt aan een bezemsteel :-)
Wel met volwassenen in de buurt natuurlijk & oppassen bij het openmaken van de klopper!

Did I already tell you about my briljant & funny big brother?
Last weekend we visited his family and the children made popcorn on the BBQ.

He made a construction with a soap shaker and a broom :-)
Off course only use supervised  & be carefull because the soap shaker gets very hot!
