3D printen met kinderen / 3D printing with children

Bij het Klokhuis zagen we een uitzending over 3D printen. Dat wilden wij ook!!
Dus: op internet een ontwerp gezocht & gedownload en op zoek gegaan naar een 3D printwinkel in de buurt (hier vind je een overzicht van 3D printwinkels in Nederland).

Het olifantje wat we wilden maken, komt plat op zijn buiken -met voorpoten naar voren en achterpoten naar achteren- uit de printer. Maar in het ontwerp scharnieren de poten, iets wat de printer in 1 keer opbouwt. Dus je kunt de olifant ook op 4 poten neerzetten. Of op zijn kont :-)

In Zutphen vonden we het gloednieuwe Bits2Atoms, waar we het olifantje lieten printen. En we boften ontzettend: want behalve dat 'ons' olifantje werd geprint, mochten we meekijken en vragen stellen. Isis en haar neefje vonden het supercool! Maar ook mijn zus en ik waren ontzettend onder de indruk: wat een mogelijkheden!!

Het materiaal wat voor de 3D ontwerpen wordt gebruikt is PLA een duurzaam alternatief voor plastic. Het PLA wat Bits2Atoms gebruikt is geproduceerd in Nederland, wat betekent dat 'ons' olifantje' dus echt Made in Holland is!

We found a 3D print design on the internet and went to a local 3D printing workshop. It was amazing to see how the printing process worked. Also Isis and het cousin were impressed by the possibilities!

One of the things I like most is that 3D printing makes it possible to really fabricate local. Even the PLA filling is produced in the Netherlands!

Regenproof windmolentje diy / Rain proof wind mill d.iy.

 Windmolentjes vouwen is makkelijk en leuk.

Maar als het een beetje waait in Nederland zit daar meestal ook meteen regen bij. Daar gaan je mooie papieren windmolentjes...Wij maakten ze van foambladen. Net zo simpel, maar wel iets beter bestand tegen het weer.

Dit heb je nodig:
- Foambladen (bijvoorbeeld van de Action)
- Lange rechte stok
- Speld
- Strijkkralen

Zo maak je ze:

- Van een A4 blad maak je makkelijk een vierkant door een hoek recht naar boven te vouwen. De gevouwen driehoek die je nu hebt is je vierkant. Knip het overgebleven stuk foam af langs de lijn die ontstaat.
- Je hebt nu een vierkant met 1 diagonale vouw. Maak nog een diagonale vouw door aan de andere kant twee tegengestelde punten naar elkaar toe te vouwen.
- Knip nu de vouwen voor iets meer dan de helft in. Dit hoeft niet heel precies op de helft te zijn, wel precies op de vouw.
- Vouw om en om de punten naar het midden van je vierkant (je vouwt maar 4 flappen naar binnen).
- Met een speld zet je de naar binnen gevouwen punten vast
- Prik 3 strijkkralen op de speld en bevestig de speld aan de bovenkant (de platte kant waar de tak is afgebroken / gezaagd) van je stok (dit gaat het makkelijkst met een tangetje).
- Buig de speld zodat deze je molentje haaks op de stok staat en vrij kan bewegen naar de wind.
- En nu de tuin in!

Folding wind mills is fun and easy. But most of the time when it is windy outside, it's also raining.... So we made wind mills of foam sheets. More rain resistant then the paper version.

This is what you need:
- Foam sheets
- Long straight sticks
- Pin
- Hama beads

- Make a square out of a A4 foam sheet by folding one point straight to the other side. The triangle you have just folded will be your square, but first cut of the rest of the foam.
Unfold your triangle. You now have a square with 1 diagonal line. Make another diagonal line by folding the other point to the opposite side.
- Cut all the 4 lines halfway. You don't have to be very precise on the half, but try to cut exactly on your folding line.

- Fold every other point towards the middle and secure with the pin.

- Put 3 Hama (or other small beads) on the pin.
-  Using a a pair of pliers stick and bend the pin in the horizontal part of top of your stick. Make sure your pin can move freely.
- Now: go outside!

Elastiekjes d.i.y. / Hair elastics d.i.y.

Kleine meisjes worden groot en/ of vallen gaten in hun lievelings-panty.

Wij deden zoals in de eighties en knipten er haarelastiekjes van! Ideaal, want zacht voor lange lokken (die ijzertjes in veel haarelastiekjes schijnen je haar te beschadigen). 

Nog een tip -die we pas ontdekte- voor alle Rapunzels in-spe: de Tangle Teezer. Toegegeven: naam is idioot en de prijs is aan de hoge kant voor een plastic borstel... maar hij werkt echt.

Little girls grow out and/or they fall holes in their favorite tights.

We did like we did in the eighties: we've cut her tights into hair elastics! Perfect, because they don't damage your hair -like the old fashioned ones do-.

Another must have for all little-Rapunzels that we have just discovered: the Tangle Teezer. I know, the name is a bit idiot and it seems a little over priced... But it is actually worth it!

Chauffe Coeur

Eindelijk weer eens iets gebreid: een chauffe coeur voor Isis.
Een simpel omslagvestje om haar schouders te beschermen tegen de zomerzon die straks heus wel gaat schijnen. En om die rottige vlek op haar balletpakje te verbergen ;-)

Het is een simpel model. Ik heb dit patroon gebruikt als leidraad, maar ben gestart met meer steken aangezien het beschreven model maar tot 2 jaar gaat. Voor het meerderen heb ik deze handleiding gebruikt.

Finally I finished a knitting project: a chauffe coeur.
A 'heart warmer' to protect her shoulders from the burning sun that will have to start shining of of these days. And to cover up that nasty stain on her ballet leotard ;-)

It is a simple model, I used this pattern, but started with more stitches because the original pattern sizes stop at 2 years. For the extra stitches I used Arne & Carlos' technique.

Vaderdag knutsel / Father's day d.i.y.

Borduurwerk -met haar tong uit haar mond- voor Vaderdag.
Hier vond ik sterrenbeelden. Die van haar vader heb ik uitgeprint & met een prikpen in een zwart papier geprikt. Isis heeft met een stopnaald en wit borduurgaren de lijnen tussen de sterren geborduurd.

Inpakken, label eraan en eindelijk eens: ruim op tijd voor Vaderdag!

She embroidered dad's constellation for Father's day.
Here I found a picture of the star constellations. I printed the picture of her father sign & used a darning needle to mark the stars in a piece of black paper. Isis then embroidered the lines with white embroidery thread.

Wrap, put a tag on it & you're done: well in time for Father's day!

BBQ Popcorn

Had ik al verteld dat mijn broer briljant leuk is?
Afgelopen weekend hebben de kinderen bij hem popcorn gemaakt op de barbecue.

Dat doe je -natuurlijk- met een zeepklopper die je vastmaakt aan een bezemsteel :-)
Wel met volwassenen in de buurt natuurlijk & oppassen bij het openmaken van de klopper!

Did I already tell you about my briljant & funny big brother?
Last weekend we visited his family and the children made popcorn on the BBQ.

He made a construction with a soap shaker and a broom :-)
Off course only use supervised  & be carefull because the soap shaker gets very hot!

ZsaZsa rokje / ZsaZsa skirt

(Is het iemand eigenlijk duidelijk wat mevrouw ZsaZsa nou bedoelt bij dat eerste rokje: knip je het beleg nu wel of niet mee?)

Mijn eerste rokje is een feit! 
Gewapend met haar boek en de 80-jaar oude Singer van mijn schoonmoeder heb ik me door een oud gordijn heen geworsteld. 

Isis vind 'm perfect! Dat is 'ie niet... maar af is 'ie wel :-)

So I did it: I made a skirt for Isis!
I used her book an old curtain and my mother in laws 80- year old Singer.

Isis thinks it's perfect. Of course it's not perfect...but it's finished and ready to wear! :-)

It's a clock

Elk voordeel heeft zijn nadeel...
Zo ook de alles verduisterende luiken in ons huis hier in Zwitserland.

Want of Isis nu midden in de nacht wakker wordt, of 's ochtends vroeg: het is altijd aardedonker. Maar ze kan nog geen klokkijken, dus roept ze ons midden in de nacht een paar keer wakker om te checken hoe laat het is. Niet fijn!

Er zijn veel oplossingen te koop met lampjes en bewegende figuurtjes, maar ik wilde graag dat ze tegelijkertijd ook echt zelf wat meer grip zou krijgen op het verloop van de dag. Dus kwam ik uit bij It's a Clock. Een 'echte' klok aangevuld met symbolen. Ze moet dus echt zelf kijken of het al tijd is om op te staan en op de klok is ook ruimte voor de andere activiteiten van een dag.

Geweldige klok met 2 nadelen:
hij maakt veel -echt irritant veel- geluid bij het tikken en hij was redelijk duur (bij Bol.com en de Bijenkorf vond ik de goedkoopste).

Toen zag ik dit idee bij Veetje: simpel, goedkoop en met ruimte in de uitvoering voor je eigen symbolen bij de uren!

Our house in Switzerland has shutters that work really well. Too good, maybe...

Isis can't tell if it is time to wake up because even in the morning her room is completely dark. And she didn't yet learned to tell the time, so she wakes us up in the middle of the night to ask if she may wake up :-(

I saw some solutions that tell children to wake up by showing them a light or a moving figure. But I really wanted her to 'watch' a clock herself and also understand more the concept of time. It's a Clock
is a real clock made fun and more understandeble because of the symbols you can add to it. 

Her new It's a Clock works: I get to sleep through the night. But it is not perfect:
the clock ticks loud -very loud- and I think it was an expensive solution (Bol.com and de Bijenkorf sell one for € 19,99, but the 'normal' price is € 35,-).

Later, I saw this idea at Veetje's and I think it is briljant: simple, cheap and with room for personalization -make your own symbols and paste them at the hours where they belong-.

Bandana cowl

Heel eerlijk gezegd snap ik niet dat er nog kinderen rondlopen met een sjaal!

Vorig jaar breide ik voor Isis een col omdat ze graag alles zelf wilde doen en sindsdien zijn we om: geen gehannes met een sjaal die niet goed om geknoopt is en waarvan de uiteinden op de vieze -natte- straat bengelen. Toevallig las ik vandaag op Babyccinokids dat er op de Franse school van Emilie serieus een sjalen-verbod geldt. Gaat misschien een beetje ver, maar echt: een col is zo veel praktischer!

Dit weekend breide ik een nieuwe col voor Isis haar collectie. Een bandana cowl naar het patroon van Purlbee. Ik heb naald 5 gebruikt en verder gewoon het patroon gevolgd, wat resulteerde in een kindermaat.

I realy don't get it why there are still children wearing scarves!

Last year I knitted a cowl for Isis as she wanted to be able to do everything by herself. And since then we are convinced: no more loose and badly tied scarves -hanging on the wet & dirty streets- for us. Funny enough, today I read on Babyccinokids that the French school that Emilie her children attend, has banned scarves. I'm not a big fan of rules about clothing, but I have to agree that a cowl is mutch more practical to use. Especially for a child.

Last weekend I knitted a new cowl for Isis her collection. A bandana cowl using the pattern by Purlbee. I used needle size 5mm and just followed the pattern. The small needle adjustment resulted in a child size.

Jennifer Krik van She Knows.com maakte deze opvouwbare variant van een kartonnen speelhuisje. Niks anders nodig dan een kartonnen doos, een scherp mes en fluor ducttape van de HEMA!

Tenten bouwen is geweldig!

Vorig jaar heb ik met deze supersimpele tutorial een wigwam voor Isis gemaakt. En een tent bouwen kan natuurlijk ook heel eenvoudig -maar niet minder leuk- met een paar stoelen, een laken en de altijd handige reuzeknijpers.

Maar deze set van Donna Wilson is ook om hebberig van te worden!!
Ook leuk voor buiten in de tuin als de regen voorbij is ;-)

Play tents are the best!

Last year I used this super simple tutorial to make a wigwam for Isis. But of course the easiest play tents are made using a few chairs, a blanket and these very useful giant clothepins.

But then I saw this set by Donna Wilson, I love it!!
And when the rain is over, just move it to your garden ;-)
